Surprise! new

A sheep! What’s a sheep doing here!? There’s an unexpected visitor in the cow field and she wan’t a turn in front of the camera. I just love the playfulness of this picture. It’s just like any old Lauren’s Cows photo shoot in the field. I’ve found the perfect position, a wonderfully curious cow is plodding over, it’s going to be the perfect shot, and just as a click the shutter ‘Surprise!’ a rogue sheep photobombs the photograph! The smile on Boris the sheep’s face is so contagious, it makes me chuckle when ever I see him.

It was a big task taking on a sheep. My hand and paintbrushes know cows. From their coats and colours, to their noses and eyelashes, I know cows! But painting a sheep was a completely different kettle of fish. I still wanted to play with colour and paint in my style but I faced new textures, new anatomy and I wanted to get it just right. After all, if I’m going to paint a sheep, it needs to be a blinking good one! But I am ecstatic with how it turned out.

Plus it gives a nod to my heritage as I actually spent my childhood on a sheep farm in Ravenscar, which my uncle still farms to this day. I’ve never had the same pull to sheep as I do cows, but they definitely have influenced my want to capture the British countryside and our farming culture.
